Beth studied philosophy in Cambridge where she obsessed over functionalism, truth tables and logic. After moving to London in 2012 (to work at the Institude of Art and Ideas), she fell in love with neuroscience. This then led a brief stint in academia, trying to figure out some inputs and outputs of the mind-brain, AKA “the reality machine”. But without computationally modelling complex systems ,or at least making robots, that wasn’t going to go anywhere sufficiently interesting.

During some post-research time out, she accidentally grew a start-up from two people in an attic into a successful, multi-million turnover, “Ed-tech” company. By then, the taste of technology had taken hold. It was clear that one could better combine everything interesting in life by programming.

So Beth returned, once more, to functions. This time, with a little more creative control.

Beth is now a Staff Engineer managing state across web apps, the blockchain, and secure hardware. She’s been a regular host of the ReactJS Girls London Meetup, and has given talks on Zen and the art of code maintenance, the React Forget compiler and the pitfalls of static pre-rendering.
